The way I see it, the ship is sinking in LA. No trades seem to be working, and the whole team is going to hate Kobe next year and nobody's going to want to play with him even tho they have to. I think the Lakers are back on track with that third consecutive win last night. Lamar probably had his best game since coming back from the injury, with almost a triple double. Kobe was doing his thing as usual, he had the Jazz biting on every little fake and drawing fouls here and there. Smush had a hot hand all night, but Maurice could've done better. But I still think they need work on their interior defense, they allowed a lot of dunks and layups for the Jazz. Bynum needs some more experience, and they need to fortify their interior defense

Those Lakers won three titles in three years only when Duncan's knee was giving him problems (Duncan did not play in 2000 because of major knee surgery, and his knee gave out on him in both the 2001 and 2002 playoffs where the young mid 20 something Duncan looked like the old Patrick Ewing in his last year with the Knicks where Ewing could barely run up and down the court. I believe that in time the cavs will do it. Lebron is probably the best all around player in the league, hughes is a mighty dfender, varejoa is the guy that can get rebound and block shot over anyone regardless of how big they are. What they need is another potent scorer with a mcgrady, kobe-like skills that is not a ball hog, and I believe 2 or 3 years down the line theyll get it.

There are still some 20 games left though and with the race so close right now, they could drop to a 5 seed in a few games. I do think they or the Spurs will finish #1 in the West though. It is nice to see that The Lakers brass finally got Gasol to help out Kobe. Still, the Werst is going to be an extremely tough battle this year. Kobe is still the best player in the NBA.

Yes , there starting unit is very strong. Kobe and Fisher, one of the better guard combinations. Also one of the better frontlines, in Bynum,Gasol, and Odom. Walton , farmer, and Turiaf off the bench. Could use a shooter off the bench!
The Lakers have always been a great team! Their tradition is about winning championships - they've the 2nd most championships in NBA history and are the winningest team in NBA history. They are a franchise with a history of winning, some great loyal fans, and it looks like the Lakers are back!!!

i can't wait to hang a couple of more banners up in the Staples Center and hopefully we'll catch the Celtics for the most NBA championships by the end of the decade.

They have great chemistry and are playing hard which had been a little lacking the last couple of years. I really like the cast of players they have and with Ariza and Bynum coming back they can be a force to reckon with in the playoffs!

I do think they are a good team. I think at the moment they are playing some of the best basketball in the league. I think the Gasol trade has worked out really well, given them a good inside presence, given KB24 something to work with. I think when Bynum comes back, this trade will look even better than it does right now. They are playing a team oriented game which suits them a lot better. The pick and roll with Kobe and Gasol, is one of the most unstoppable moves in basketball right now. I do question their depth though. They are a really solid team through the first 7 players, but a little suspect after that. They should go deep in to the playoffs though....

I'm a Lakers fan and I say they just didn't have enough help. The only factors were Kobe, Lamar, and Walton. They don't have good role players that the problem. As for last year they had your Suns beat but I give em their props though. If you look at all the Championship teams they had complementary players. Jordan had Pippen, Ron Harper who averaged 20 with Cleveland, Kukoc, B.J. Armstrong, Kerr, Paxon, Winnington, and later Rodman.

if you're a laker or kobe fan, your input is next to invalid, seeing as you're biased...but no..obviously the Suns are a WAAAYYYY better TEAM than the Lakers, who used to have an actual lineup, what with Derek Fisher, Robert Horry, Shaq, all who have since leaving LA have shown up in their respective conference finals (excluding shaq, this year). Like i said, Fisher led the Jazz (def. not a fan of Utah), and Horry's made some key plays for the Spurs the last three seasons (not counting the body check on Nash). the lakers do have some great young talent and they might be overall more talented, but even though there bench is terrible i have the Celtics in 7, only because you can't beat out the experience and ability of the big three. If the lakers bench can do what they did in game 5 against the spurs throughout the series it would give Kobe Odom and Gasol rested giving the lakers a good chance of winning though

The Lakers and Celtics again! I love it! I'm enamored by the city of Boston and New England in particular(it's so uniquely beautiful), but Los Angeles is the ultimate for me. I lived in Southern California as a small child, and L.A. has always stuck with me ever since. I must confess I was on the Celtic bandwagon for a time from 86-88, and rooted for them in 87 against the Lakers. It's a complicated reason as to why I did that. But since then, my undying love for L.A. has returned me to rooting for the Lakers like I always SHOULD have. I am so happy that they are playing the Celtics again. I feel I'm making up for not rooting for L.A. in 87.

As for the actual matchup? I can't logically see how the Lakers can lose. Yes, Boston had a better record and swept the Lakers during the season. However, considering the talent level of their respective conferences, it's quite another story. Boston was taken the distance by Atlanta, the EIGHTH seed with a LOSING record. Cleveland went the distance with them as well. Meanwhile, over in the West, Golden State DID NOT qualify for the postseason despite a 48-34 record. How question-raising is that in itself? Not to mention that Kobe and Co. made it look so easy against the Spurs. Aging San Antonio may be, but still the class of the NBA. If these are any indicators, L.A. is in for a great '08!

Looking at both rosters you can simply conclude that the Lakers team of today is a lot more athletic and talented then the Bulls roster of the second half of the 90's. While Michael Jordan and Kobe might cancel each other out the succeding players is not of equal talent with the one opposed to them.

Chicago has a number of sub-par players who rode Jordan and Pippen's glory, players like: Randy Brown, Luc Longley, Bill Wennington and a certain Matt Steigenga (who I doubt ever played a single game in the league) would absolutely be overmatched when pitted against the likes of Shasha Vujacic, Jordan Farmar, Luke Walton, Ronnie Turiaf, Trevor Ariza, DJ Mbenga, Ira Newble, Andrew Bynum and Chris Mihm.

Overall this Lakers team is much superior than the Bulls team.

To me, it's pretty close. I go with the Spurs since they are my team, but also because they have the experience. Most of the team that won last year is still there as well. Yes, they are going to get tired quicker, but at the same time, Parker and Ginobilli will keep up with whoever they are playing. Also, they usually manage to slow fast teams down, so I really don't see them getting worn out by any one team in particular. I do feel for whoever comes out of the west because there is no easy series in the west. By the time the finals start, whoever comes out of the west is going to be pretty beat up, while the east should be pretty easy until you get to the Eastern Conference Finals, but that should be the only really grueling series. So, I think the East has a slight advantage this year since the west from 1-10 is very good. Even the Trailblazers would give ANY team a hard time in a seven game series and they are 10th in the west! Good luck to the Lakers and the Spurs, but just a little more luck to the Spurs! : )

I think so, even though Kobe is shooting the ball more than ever. I think that the rest of the starting lineup is starting to figure out the triangle offense. I think as the play of Odom and Smush Parker improves, Kobe won't have to take as many shots. I also like their rookie Andrew Bynum, this kid is for real and he's only 18. This team will make the playoffs, but they will lose in the first round.

Not really. It'd be more or less the same - Kobe on fire, no one else really stepping up - and the only problem is, is if and when Kobe finally comes crashing back to Earth after all his stellar star-rocketing stats explosion lately and posts average numbers (well, average for him, anyway) the Lakers will be losing more and more.

No. The real reason Shaq left is because Miami was willing to pay him the money he wanted and LA wasn't. Shaq wanted a 5 year deal worth an average of 30 mil. a year. Buss (the Laker owner) knew that 1. Shaq was good for only 2 more years and 2. Keeping Kobe and giving Shaq the extension he wanted would have crippled their ability to keep and build a team around those stars. Letting Kobe go was not an option, but, given the fact that Shaq was on the down side of his career, letting Shaq go was the lesser of two evils.

Now we can see that Buss made the right decision. Miami is in last place because Shaq is half the player he used to be, but makes the same money he used to. Money that could be spent improving the team is tied to a washed up, injury prone center, so not only are they bad, but they are going to stay bad for a while. The Lakers, meanwhile, are in 2nd place and surging.

There's no doubt in my mind that if Shaq woulda stayed in LA for a few more seasons after 2004, the Lakers would've had at least 1 more championship. Shaq was great in '04 and '05 as was Kobe. The duo was unstoppable, and if Kobe would've been a better person, he would've been one ring richer.

As a Boston fan, I say this game would go to game 7. But first the Celtics have to get past the Pistons in the conference finals. I think Garnett has the advantage over Gasol(if he's healthy) Kobe has the advantage over Pierce. Allen got the advantage shooting over anybody else on the court. Rondo beats Fisher with his defensive skills. When Bynum gets back, I beleive he has the advantage over Perkins and Powe, pending wether or not he plays like he was playing before his injury.

The Lakers look like they're headed in the direction of another dynasty when you really absorb what they are doing.

The Lakers have the most potent, versitle lineup in all of basketball. They have speed, size, depth, athleticism, they actually have a glut of talent now.

They will at very least challenge for the western conference title this year, and are very capable of beating any team they face from the East if they get out of the West.

Boston is just as good this year, but I don't see them being this good in the next 3 years because KG, Allen, and Pierce will all be way past their primes. The Lakers however, if all goes well, will be a contender for the next 5 to 7 years, because they're core is so young.

Shaq left the lakers because he wasnt getting treated like the franchise player he once was...often during the last camp in Hawaii he needled Doc to get the extention done...this was prior to the season that saw Malone and Peyton come to the team...In the spring prior to that season while in the bay area watching the lakers play the warriors I was made privy to the info that the team was going to make a move on Malone for the mid level exemption, which for a certain clause left the lakers only paying half of that (the league would pitch the rest, imagine less than a mil) and that GP would move to half or less what he made the season prior 17M as I remember, if they got Malone that he would also sign...anyway, after the season of high hopes and a loaded team ended with Detroit winning the series handily...much like happened the last time these two teams met in the finals...there was a sense that a big change was going to be needed in order to compete in the future for the team and its management...Doc made it clear thru Mitch that Kobe was untouchable at that point, and he had always said he loved when the team ran, like the old days...Shaq took this as his cue, as at the time he knew many teams would also love his services but few had what would make a trade or compensation viable(read; dallas wouldnt part with Dirk)...the heat put together a package, away the big guy went to a team well suited to make a run, and the lakers started the task of rebuilding again...one must not forget that Doc has done this twice now since hes owned the team(8 titles in two runs with totally different squads, unprecedented in todays atmosphere of free agency and money chasing...Shaq was not going to get some huge contract that would strap the team from the rebuilding project that was necessary, he got another ring...and it would appear that everything is as all parties involved wanted...(btw wade did quite well leading the heat as they pushed the soon to be champion pistons (who beat down the lakers) to 6 games in the first round of the east without shaq or many of the players that have come or developed in the last two years)

I hated Kobe since the day Shaq left, but suprisingly hearing him today made me sympathize with him. Hearing him talk to all the radio guys like the Loose Cannon made me soften my stance toward him.
